Virtually everyone would like to be fit, however, it does require a fair amount of effort, so just how great is the importance of physical fitness? The answer is ‘very’ and in this article a few of the benefits of being physically fit will be mentioned. The list, however, is almost endless so there are for more benefits than the many great ones mentioned here; these are a few that I feel are most important.
A healthy body helps to create a healthy mind
There are many cerebral benefits that come as a result of being fit. One example is improved cognitive function; results have shown that regular exercise which results in better physical fitness can increase the overall functioning of your mind. Perhaps related to this is a lower level of stress, which again is also perhaps related to a lesser chance of being depressed. Being happier and less stressed through a few hours of exercise a week is without a doubt worth it one hundred percent. Fitness has also been shown to give greater energy levels to the participants and helps to regulate sleeping patterns. As sleeping problems are common for many people at some point in their life, some way to regulate it would help massively, and fitness could very well be a solution.
Me, ill? Nope!
Moderate levels of exercise have been shown to lower the chance of getting many illnesses even so far as reducing the risk of certain cancers! Cholesterol and blood pressure is generally at a better level in someone who is fit than someone who isn’t. Moreover, you are less likely to become diabetic if you are fit and healthy. Perhaps because of these and other reasons exercise often leads to an increased life expectancy. Again for only a few hours of exercise every week, there are further great benefits, even adding a few extra years onto your life! As mentioned here being fit helps the immune system, often helping to prevent the illnesses, however, it cannot completely stop some illnesses (such as the common cold), but having a good immune system and being physically fit can help to recover from these in minimal amounts of time.
Fat be gone!
Exercise has been shown to burn fat, and is used by many people on a regular basis to lose weight. It is often seen as a relatively easy way to lose weight as well. But a greater level of physical fitness does also lead to a greater amount of fat that can be burned; one simple example is that an active worker will require more calories in their diet than an office worker. Yet one fact that is not commonly known is that increased levels of fitness and exercise increase your resting metabolic rate; this is the amount of energy used while in a resting state. Therefore the fitter you are, and the more muscle you have, the more fat and energy is burnt during a workout and also whilst resting; resulting in it being easier to maintain the fitness levels.
Perfectly sculpted body
Out of all of the aforementioned benefits of fitness, this is in my humble opinion the least important, however is wanted by many people. Many people partake in exercise not only to lose weight but to improve their physique. The fit athletic physique is the one that is shown by many models both male and female (excluding catwalk models that tend to be underweight and unhealthy). Therefore it is shown everywhere as the ‘way to be’; as a result many people want to be like this. Many companies have been known to edit photos of models in order to make them appear to don a more athletic physique, showing the desire for this physical fitness perfection. Being fit and having these physiques can boost confidence in many situations. So this along with the other benefits clearly demonstrates the importance of being physically fit.
